Abel Motorsports Indy Recap 2019

Louisville, Ky. – Sometimes in racing, even the best teams can struggle. That’s one of the things that makes the sport so demanding. Championship team Abel Motorsports of Louisville, Ky. had a fight on its hands during the Indy Grand Prix weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Abel’s two-car Indy Pro 2000 Championship Presented by Cooper Tires team came into the season’s second weekend of racing with lots of confidence, having won the year’s first two events at St. Petersburg, FL. But tough weather conditions and Indy’s inherent challenges forced the team to dig deep, on their way to a pair of top five finishes and a pair of Hard Charger awards.

For team veteran Jacob Abel, despite the challenges the Indy Grand Prix weekend represented substantial gains over his first Indy Pro 2000 effort at St. Pete. The 18-year-old came from 9th on the grid to 7th in Friday’s opener, and backed that up Saturday by moving up from 10th at the start to 6th at the checkers. “We just missed it here. We had to chase the setup all weekend and it was frustrating.  Still, we improved quite a bit. I got shuffled to the back on the first lap and was able to come back and have a good rest of the race. The car started coming to me at the end. I started to figure it out more.  I was able to capitalize on that and make the most of what we had.” Abel leaves the Indy road course 8th in points, 17 markers out of 5th.

RTI_IndyGP_052019_G_5364For returning ace Parker Thompson, the weekend was also frustrating, but with a silver lining. “We won two Hard Charger awards, so it wasn’t a total loss, right? To salvage a weekend like we did, that’s what wins championships. We had tough qualifying sessions, and to come away with two top fives is a testament to what this team can do. We’re still a brand-new team, still learning how to work with each other, still learning this car.  We found some pace, and our crew gave me a car capable of getting to the front.” The young Canadian came from 13th on the grid Friday to finish 5th and raced from 12th to 5th on Saturday. He stands second in Indy Pro 2000 standings now, just 11 markers out of the lead.

The team now prepares for its first-ever oval track event at Lucas Oil Raceway just west of Indy on Friday, May 24, part of Carb Night with the USAC Silver Crown Series.
